I have a 2007 Chevrolet HHR and recently noticed that after the air conditioner has been running for a while it will alternate between ice cold air to very warm air. Could the freon be running low?
They don’t use Freon any longer- what is in there is called R143-a
Also, if it starts blowing warm, but after a short time blows cold again, it is just ther cycling of the compressor. If it stays warm, you could have a few different things going on.
Sound like the “Orifice tube” is allowing too much refrigerant to enter the evaporator, when the evaporator freezes, air can not pass through it to be cool, later when warm air thaws it, it will work again, and the cycle repeats.
You will also see one of the ac lines going into the firewall become frosted when air is warm if the problem is cause by a faulty orifice tube.

Sounds like maybe the compressor is kicking on and off. It could be going out.
